Rules and services of the Aquarium

The Aquarium of Genoa’s regulations are short and practical. Here is what you can bring, where to eat, how to take photos and which services you will find along the route, with the operator’s words and no invented rules.

Many questions about the Aquarium of Genoa concern backpacks, food and clothing. The official answers are simpler than you might think: the operator lists a few precise bans and several services, from the cloakroom to the picnic area.

We list them from the visit regulations, the services page and the FAQ, in October 2026. Where the operator says nothing, we write it.

The short answer

Backpacks are not banned: if you want to leave it, the cloakroom costs 3 euros per item. Knives, weapons and flammable materials are not allowed, nor are animals except guide dogs. You cannot eat in the halls; you can have lunch at Tender, Gusto a Bordo or with a packed lunch in the picnic area on the deck of the Nave Blu.

Can I bring a backpack to the Aquarium of Genoa?

Yes: the regulations do not ban backpacks, and the staffed cloakroom takes clothes and luggage for 3 euros per item.

The cloakroom is useful especially if you arrive with a suitcase or heavy jackets. There is only one rule about bags for some guided experiences: there, bags, backpacks and personal items must be left in the space indicated by the staff.

One thing you cannot leave at the cloakroom: banned items, such as knives and flammable materials, which cannot enter even in storage.

Entry ticket with lunch in the options: sandwich, street food or focaccia, without worrying about what to put in your backpack.

What cannot be brought to the Aquarium?

Knives and sharp or pointed objects, weapons and ammunition, flammable or explosive materials, and pets.

  • Dangerous objects are also banned in the cloakroom. Armed people do not enter, not even with a gun licence.
  • Animals are not allowed, except guide dogs for the visually impaired.
  • Scooters, bicycles and skateboards are not used inside.
  • Smoking is prohibited, even with an electronic cigarette, except in the dedicated areas on the deck of the Nave Blu.

And keep your ticket until the end: staff may ask to see it, and you cannot re-enter with the same ticket.

How should I dress for the Aquarium of Genoa?

As you prefer: there is no published dress code for the visit.

The clothing instructions only concern guided experiences. For 'A tu per tu con i delfini', the operator recommends 'comfortable and seasonal clothing' and closed shoes without heels, preferably with rubber soles. With the penguins, you enter low-temperature areas, so you need suitable clothes and closed shoes with rubber soles.

For the normal visit, comfortable shoes are enough: the route lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, almost all on foot.

Can I take photos at the Aquarium of Genoa?

Yes, amateur photos and videos; flash and spotlights for filming are prohibited.

The ban, the operator states, is 'to protect animal welfare'. For photographic services or professional filming, you must contact the Aquarium’s press office in advance.

At the entrance there is also the souvenir photo. It is not mandatory to have your photo taken or to buy the photo; for privacy reasons, photos can only be collected on the day they are taken.

Can I eat inside the Aquarium?

Not in the exhibition halls; you can eat at the Tender fast food, the Gusto a Bordo restaurant or in the picnic area.

The Tender, about halfway through, is open every day from 8:30 to 17:30, with sandwiches, hamburgers, pizza, focaccia and salads. Gusto a Bordo, on the deck of the Nave Blu, is the restaurant with a revisited traditional cuisine, open from 12:00 to 15:00. Packaged gluten-free foods are available at the catering points.

Along the route you will also find snack and hot and cold drink vending machines. Menus and prices of the catering points are not listed here; you will find them on the catering page or on site.

Is it possible to have a packed lunch at the Aquarium?

Yes, in the outdoor picnic area on the deck of the Nave Blu, equipped with tables and benches.

The operator describes it as the space 'where you can eat your packed lunch sheltered from the sun'. In the halls, however, food and drinks cannot be consumed.

If you prefer not to bring anything, some options on GetYourGuide include lunch: the entry ticket has sandwich, street food or focaccia in the options, while the ticket with lunch includes a sandwich, chips and a drink at Tender.

  • The baby corner has 6 toilets with changing tables along the route.

Is the Aquarium of Genoa accessible?

Yes: it is built without architectural barriers for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and has the 'Ok! Tourism for all' mark.

The lifts have Braille signs and voice announcements of the floor, guide dogs are allowed and the route is the same for everyone. People with certified disabilities pay the reduced price, from 20 to 29 euros online. The companion of someone with 100% disability enters for free, collecting the ticket at the desk with the certificate.

With a pushchair, the normal route is done without problems. In the technical areas of some experiences, such as the one with the penguins, pushchairs and wheelchairs are not allowed.
